5 Signs Your Tyres Need Replacing

Tyres wear down gradually, and because it happens slowly, many drivers don’t notice until performance or safety is affected. Here are five clear signs it’s time to replace them.

1. Low Tread Depth

The UK legal limit is 1.6mm, but performance starts dropping well before that. Low tread increases braking distance and aquaplaning risk in wet conditions.

2. Cracks, Splits or Bulges

Sidewall cracks, cuts or bulges indicate structural damage. These tyres can fail without warning, especially at speed or under load.

3. Uneven Wear Patterns

Uneven wear can mean alignment issues, over/under-inflation, or suspension faults. If one tyre is wearing faster, don’t ignore it.

4. Vibration or Noise While Driving

Shaking or vibration could point to worn tyres, wheel balancing issues or internal tyre damage.

5. Age & Mileage

Even if unused, rubber deteriorates. Tyres older than 5–6 years should be inspected or replaced for safety.

Safety First

Driving on worn tyres reduces grip, increases braking distance, and raises the chance of a blowout.
